Assist as a member of the surgical team who works with the surgeon, registered nurse, and anesthesiologist delivering direct patient care before, during and after surgery. The technologist functions as an instrument assistant and may also function as a circulating assistant under supervision of a registered nurse.
Responsibilities:
- Contributes to continuity of care under the direction of a registered nurse.
- a. Assist surgeons at the sterile field with instruments needed for each procedure as defined by preference cards and special request.
- b. Provides for routine maintenance, cleaning/sterilization, and management of equipment (and prostheses, if applicable).
- c. Maintains current knowledge of procedures and equipment/instruments. (See Addendum - Equipment: OR)
- d. Implements other patient care activities as assigned according to Standards of Care and Practice. (See Addendum: Skills, Patient Populations)
- e. Coordinates the use of equipment based on OR schedule and patient needs.
- f. Utilizes computer information management systems to facilitate patient care.
- Facilitates daily operations/flow of work of assigned area(s).
- a. Organizes and reprioritizes work based on patients' needs, available resources, and unit requirements.
- b. Supports compliance with hospital accreditation, state licensure, and other external accrediting agency requirements. (See Addendum: Quality and Other Responsibilities)
- c. Reviews unit/department communication to maintain current working knowledge of job responsibilities. (See Addendum: Communication Activities)
- Contributes to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff by following policies, procedures, and protocols.
- a. Identifies patients at risk for injury and participates in instituting measures to prevent/reduce the risk. (See Addendum: Skills-Safety/Infection Control, and Precautions)
- b. Adheres to AGE APPROPRIATE PROTOCOLS in order to ensure patient safety based on developmental needs. (See Addendum: Patient Populations)
- c. Contributes to prevention of infectious diseases among employees, patients, and visitors by adhering to Infection Control policies and procedures. (See Addendum: Skills-Safety/Infection Control)
- d. Completes employee accident reports and contributes information to complete incident, medication variance, infection control variance reports. (See Addendum: Skills-Safety/Infection Control)
- e. Reports environmental safety hazards, including damaged and broken equipment.
- f. Responds to patient monitor alarms in a timely fashion.
- g. Ensures emergency readiness, and initiates timely emergency measures as appropriate according to role responsibilities. (See Addendum: Emergency Events)
- Participates in the achievement of unit/department fiscal goals.
- a. Conserves hospital resources.
- b. Contributes to capture of patient charges and revenue generation.
Qualifications:
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Graduate of a recognized surgical technologist program.
Motor Vehicle Operator Designation: Employees in this position will not operate vehicles for an assigned business purpose
